It Was That Kind of Weekend

We set up at a comic convention in town this weekend. It wasn't a particularly busy show, but we made the most of it.

Here are a few nuggets from the weekend.

It was slow Saturday, so Tracy and I snuck away to TJMaxx. Tracy found a pair of badass jeans and a top. I found the coolest Betsey Johnson purse in the universe.

We stopped at Camino Real for Ben's birthday dinner. We also purchased Mexican food erasers from the vending machine.

On Sunday, Tracy and I headed over to the flea market next door. Mr. Banana Pants is one scary dude.

Then more standing around.

Ben and Aron purchased numerous funny books.


Ben read an, errrrmmm... interesting Sgt Rock comic.

I did find Iron Man at the convention. Somehow, he (and hanging out with The Ellers) made it all worth it.

A Nugget of Snowfall

Hello Again!

I have been a busy bee this week packing orders for our businesses. Yes, the holidays are here, and as the song says, it's "the most wonderful time of the year"! Really? I'm not so sure how I feel about that.....  Honestly, I love this time of year, but we are usually too busy to enjoy it. But I really shouldn't complain :)

We did have a few flakes of snow yesterday. None of it stuck, but it was very pretty nonetheless. Being from Florida, I am still fascintated by the snow. Here is a quick little video I shot with my phone:



We attended a fun Gingerbread House Day on Sunday, much more on that later. Here is a snap of my husband's gingerbread house. His creation is a "baby gym", complete with eyeballs to babysit the little ones while they work out. Good grief.

My Favorite Thing: Love & Rockets: The Maggie & Hopey Stories

My husband Aron introduced me to the world of comics, or "funny-books" as I fondly call them. Before meeting Aron, I thought ALL comics were of the superhero genre. In my world, comic books equalled dude in a cape (or God forbid a leotard) saving the world from destruction and mayhem...yawn...... Oh, good grief was I wrong about comics!

The first book to change my mind was Terry Moore's series, Strangers in Paradise. I was sitting on the floor of the comic shop "Dragons Tale" in Jacksonville Beach, waiting for Aron to look through the 25 cent boxes, when I spotted the single issue  "I Dream of You". I read through it quickly, and was impressed. There was depth, story, and great art. Strangers In Paradise is considered a great book to introduce women into the male-centric comic book world.

About a year later I discovered Love & Rockets, mainly the Jamie Hernandez stories involving Maggie and Hopey. Los Brothers Hernandez consist of Jamie, Gilbert, and occasionally Mario. They have been writing Love and Rockets since the 1980s, so saying that I am late to the party is a huge understatement.

 Jamie's earliest stories are known as the "Locas" stories. The stories began with the adventures of Maggie and Hopey, best friends & sometimes lovers; Latinas living in the punk rock subculture of Southern California. There is a bit of sci-fi, superhero, and ladies wrestling thrown in for fun!

 I began reading these stories backwards, with the most recent (at the time) Ghost of Hoppers, which show us a grown up, fleshy, beautiful Maggie and all of the demons that still haunt her from her hometown of Hoppers. I still need to read the earliest stories!

What I love most about Jamie's art and writing is how human it is, in the best way.  Jamie is not afraid to write about the sadness and silences in life, and for that, I love and respect his work. There is also a wicked, fun sense of humor in all of the Love and Rockets books.

So, even if you are not a comic lover, check out Love and Rockets, the Locas stories. Their publisher, Fanatagraphics, has re-released the earlier work into easy to follow volumes. Also, check out this page on their website, it will navigate you on how to read these in order, unlike me! This is the first volume to read....the one I need to get caught up on :)

Wish I was inspired......

...to write a lengthy post, but today is just not the day for it. We spent most of last weekend doing funnybook inventory for one of our businesses, Twisted Heroes. Thank goodness Ben and Tracy helped us, or it would have taken us a month!

I have been obsessed with hair scarves, here I am sporting a cherry one from Domino Dollhouse.

I have opened an etsy store called Lola's Lovelies, sellling my handmade hair flowers. I made a Hello Kitty one, because that's how I roll :)

Yes, I am now running Twisted Heroes, Lola-Rocks Clothing, and Lola's Lovelies Heeee

A quick little birthday nugget

Hello Again,

I wonder if anyone is still reading my little ramblings, as they have become few and far between. I need to make a goal to blog at least once a week, or I am afraid I will stop blogging altogether.

Convention season is upon us, and that is part of the reason for my absence. My husband Aron and I set up at a variety of comic/horror/sci-fi conventions throughout the year, but late Spring-Summer it is gets pretty hectic. Aron's birthday fell between two conventions this year, and he claimed he didn't want a party. I decided to listen to him and keep it low key :)

The birthday boy decided we'd celebrate at a local Japanese steak & sushi house, Wasabi's. I wore my City Chic cherry dress I scored on sale a few months back.

Full Moon Tattoo & Horror Fest

Hello Again!
Where have I been? Well, this weekend was an insanely busy one. Lola-Rocks Clothing and my husband's company, Twisted Heroes, set up to sell our wares at the Full Moon Tattoo and Horror Fest in Nashville. It was a successful show for both our businesses, so cheers to that!

Shameless Self Promotion

It's been a few days since I blogged, but we have been bus-ay!! What is going on in my world right now? Mainly working on our online comic store Twisted Heroes and my online clothing store, Lola-Rocks Clothing. So, I thought I'd feature a couple of items from both the stores. Walking Dead Volume 1

Have you seen the AMC show? Well, the graphic novels are even better. Raw, gritty, and no holds barred. These books focus more on the human condition than the whole "undead eating human flesh" thing. They are amazing.
Johnny the Hoicidal Maniac Ladies T-Shirt

Have you read the JTHM graphic novel? Good stuff. This t-shirt is one of our bestsellers, and it is also available in Men's sizing.

OK, now on to Lola Land. We have received several new styles in lately, here are a couple of my faves:

Black Plus Size Jeggings

Yes, these are black (picture looks a tad blue), and they are fab, though they do run small. We are sold out of the XXL at the time, but should have them back in by the end of the week.

This is a cute Misses sized pencil skirt, would be awesome with a cardigan and heels.

Spooky Times

Hello Peeps,

I know, I know, It's been awhile. We are in the process of closing on our first home and moving, so things are cray-zay! The week before last we made a trip home to Florida to sell our funny books and clothing at a horror convention, Spooky Empire in Orlando. It ended up being a good show, and we made it home to St Augustine to visit family and friends as well. Here are a few random pics of the show:
