My Favorite Things: Photograph of My Grandmother

The My Favorite Things feature has been absent the past couple of weeks, but I am bringing it back! Here is one of my forever favorite things, a photograph of my grandmother, Sophie Griffin.

This was a photo booth picture taken of my grandmother when she was in her 20s. My mom had it restored as much as possible, then enlarged. I have had this photograph for about 20 years, it resides on my dresser, and is very dear to my heart. She was such a beauty! Vivid blue eyes, perfect skin, just gorgeous.

My grandmother was a very strong woman. She lived her childhood and early teenage years the child of a single mother during The Great Depression. Her father had abandoned the family when my grandmother was a little girl. She went on to marry my grandfather, Frank Griffin, when she was 16 years old.

Frank was not a kind person, but she made the best of her life, giving birth to three children, all girls. My grandmother loved the outdoors, especially fishing, gardening, and the ocean. She was an amazing cook. I think her recipe for mac and cheese was transferred to me via osmosis or DNA. My Mom and aunts never cooked it, but mine tastes much like I remember hers tasting :)

She was a great mother and grandmother. Some of my favorite childhood memories are the ones spent with her.

I was 13 years old when my grandmother passed away from ovarian cancer. Though she passed onto the other side, I still feel her nearby, always.

Thank you for letting me share, hope you all have a wonderful day!

  2. What a gorgeous photo. I wish cooking skills had been passed on to me by osmosis. My Mother's Mom made the best stew and rice. She passed when I was 9 of ovarian cancer.
