Fashion Inspiration: Joan Holloway

JoanFashion Trends & Styles - Polyvore

Joan by lolarocksclothing featuring Christian Louboutin shoes

Happy Friday to you all! I have a busy day of errands ahead of me, but wanted to take a moment to indulge in a bit of glamour!

It should be no secret that I have a bit of a girl crush on Christina Hendricks, who plays Joan Hollloway on my fave TV show, Mad Men. I just die over her hair, fab clothing, and her amazing curves! Joan is who I want to be when I grow up :)

So, I paid a little homage to Joanie via Polyvore. Now mind you, most of these items are out of my reach price wise. But, I think a little fantasy is good for the soul. Besides, this is to get us inspired, not to copy piece by piece.

I have not rocked the retro Joan look much this Summer. I have been mostly wearing flowy boho stlyes, or ultra casula pieces, mostly becuase of the heat! Once Fall is here, I will try to don some pin-up looks again.

Some might notice, is this the skirt you posted from your website? Why, yes it is! Below is the picture and link in case you are interested.

I hope you all have a wonderful Friday!

Fashion Nuggets and Homebuying Stress

Good Afternoon Peeps,

Thought I'd stop by today and show off my Fashion Nugget of the day. In case you didn't know, I really love black and white stripes, as well the brands Torrid and Pure Energy :)

Needed a close up shot so I could capture the cool embellishment on the shoulders.

Top: Pure Energy

Skirt: Torrid Clearance

Shoes: Madden Girl, purchased 2 years ago :)

Stripes are not always the most figure flattering look, but sometimes you have to just wear what you love.

I also wanted to include a humorous picture of our backyard. Aron cut the front grass yesterday afternoon, but decided he was too tired to cut the back yard. He chose to write his initials in the grass instead.

We went to talk to our credit union about a home loan this morning. Very scary, grownup stuff for us! Turns out they don't offer FHA loans, which are much more flexible, and require excellent credit. (And I do mean excellent). It turns out our credit is very good, but just short of meeting their program requirements at this time. So.....we would have to put down 20% on a house. Ummmm.....who has 20% to put down on a house? I guess some people do. She referred us out to another lender who should be able to help us. I am going to wait until tomorrow to call him, delay the stressfulness a bit, hee hee.

We received the brown pencil skirts in yesterday, I will post the link to those later. My wholesaler in LA decided to send me the wrong dresses, so the black zipper dress is not in yet :( I am trying to work it out, but if we do get them in, it will be a couple of weeks. You might ask, what dress did they send you? A very high fashion, alien looking, black strapless dress. It is rad as hell, but I am not sure it will sell. I will post a pic later today and get your opinion.

Well, I am off to Wal-mart as we are out of food. Ugghhhh....Wal-mart.

Hugs

Seven Samurai,Good Friends,and Rad Food

Hello Peeps,

Aron and I had a great day yesterday with friends in downtown Nashville! I started off the day with some fashion pics, of course!

I decided to wear super comfy dress from Old Navy. I picked it up online for only $10! My only complaint with Old Navy is their sizing, especially when I try to sneak into Misses sizes, heee heee. They run soooo large! This one actually was my true size, XXL. Shoes purchased for $13 from Ross. As you can tell, I don't like to spend a lot on clothing :)

I made my sweet Aron get in on the picture action as well. Isn't he a cutie? He just luurrrrvveesss having his picture taken!

Our plans for Saturday were to meet Ben and Tracy at Boscos for a quick lunch, then head over to the Belcourt Theatre to see Seven Samurai. Aron and I had never seen it, but Ben and Tracy said it was a must see!

Here is a pic I snapped of Ben and Tracy at Boscos. We met them at Adventure Con in Pigeon Forge a few months ago, and we have had great times hanging out with them this Summer! They run a t-shirt company called World of Strange, and carry some very cool designs. Check them out!

http://www.worldofstrange.com/

I have decided to start taking pics of fabulous food that we eat. Some people don't get the whole "taking pictures of food" thing, but oh well.....

Here is a pic of Ben and Tracy's yummy pizza......

Aron and I's Portabella Mushroom club with garlic and Parmesan fries.......YUM!

Ben and Tracy's Creme Brulee......

Our yummy Tiramisu...

We hopped over to the Belcourt to see the movie around noon. The Belcourt is a super rad historical theatre in downtown Nashville. It was built in the 1920s (when it was known as the Hillsborough Theatre). They now specialize in classic and art house films. They are showing Breathless next month, a film I have always wanted to see. Might have to drag Aron.....

The Seven Samurai was awesome! It is a long movie-around 4 hours-but it was worth it. Here is a clip if you are interested:

Here is another rad pic I took downtown, or a dragon mural done in the '90s.

After the movie we ended up at the Gerst Haus, a German restaurant, and had a few pitchers of Gerst Beer and some yum German food! Then back to our house where we ended up watching some funny stuff on You Tube. Must blog about that later!

Happy Sunday everyone! Mad Men premiere tonight, so excited!

Hugs!

A Romper and Krystals kind of Friday

Hello Again,
I'm trying to get into the habit of blogging daily. Today I played around with our camera, and tried to get some decent pics of one of my fave outfits: my Eyeshadow Plus Size Tie Dye Romper.

Yes, plus size women can wear rompers and jumpsuits! It is all about the fit, and having the confidence to rock the look. Plus size rompers are very hard to find. I bought this one early in the season, from Macy's online. I had an amusing time trying to get some decent pictures of my look:

OK, this one looks a little blurry, even "dewy" you might say. Hee heee

Ok, a little better. Let's try for more of a close up. Now let me make sure this dang self timer is on.....

Uhhhhh....I guess it wasn't hee heeee.

Alright, this one is OK. As you can see, I definitely need to work on my camera skills.

It was unbelievably hot outside today, and this was part of the reason I wanted to rock my breezy romper. This was my outfit for running to the post office and recycling hub. Sooo glamorous, right?

Well, my afternoon ended with my favorite Friday treat, Double Cheese Krystals! Nothing compares to these babies, seriously. Once a week fast food is my limit. Maybe it is too often, but it keeps me sane...

Well, lunch and a movie at the Belcourt tomorrow with Aron and friends :) Will try to snag some pics to share.

Hugs

A Break From Cleaning the House.... the story of my birdie Kiwi

Hello Followers New and Old,

Thank you to the new followers of my blog! I wanted to let you guys know that I read each and every comment, and they mean so much!

I am taking a break from cleaning. I need to psyche myself up before I clean toilets and vacuum 5 pounds of cat hair off the sofa. Also, our bird Kiwi is screaming, for no apparent reason, so.......yeaaaaaa. Have you met Kiwi? He goes by several different aliases: Weester, Weester Bird, Wee Wee, Weester Maneester, and so on. Here is a picture of his loveliness:

He looks so peaceful and calm in this picture, doesn't he? Well, he isn't. He is a feisty, gorgeous, Australian Red Rump Parakeet. He is at least 12 years old. My friend Sommer gave him to me back in 1999. She was pregnant and living with her husband in a small condo with too many pets, so one day Weester went home with me. I swear, this bird has been with me through everything. He even lived with my Mom for a while.

Sommer told me that she rescued Kiwi from a lady who was abusing him by not giving him food and water. What in the hell is wrong with people? So, needless to say, Kiwi has some issues. He won't leave his cage. In my opinion, he thinks the outside world is just an extension of his cage. I have to wash his cage out with him inside of it!

Kiwi also likes to make the sound of screeching brakes, which is lovely. He hates cups, glasses, and telephones; basically anything you raise to your head. He makes a bizarre noise like a rattlesnake when you drink a glass of water.

Kiwi used to have a friend called a Bird Buddy. It was a soft little green felt thing attached to the inside of his cage. He liked to snuggle up to it at night, and attack it during the day, especially when I walked into the room. He thought I was jealous of the Bird Buddy, and would go out of his way to attack it whenever I glanced at his cage.

Well, one day I hear Kiwi in the bedroom making a strange, desperate noise. I walk in, and see that his claw is tangled in his Buddy and he can't remove it. I unhook the Buddy from the cage, and think that maybe Kiwi will figure out how to free himself. Ummmm, no. He decides to lay, face down, on the bottom of the cage-the Buddy still attached to his foot-and give up. I am panicking, so Aron helps me out. I hold my tiny fragile bird and Aron removes the Buddy from his claw. Weester appears not to have been too traumatized by the incident, but the Buddy is no more.

Well, back to my cleaning duties. Some actual fashion stuff later :) Weester says bye-bye. Do you see why they call them Red Rump Parakeets?

Hugs,

Adrienne

Oh Mad Men, how I've missed you!

Oh Mad Men, how long has it been? 6 months? Or more? Oh the insanity!

My favorite show in the whole wide world (sorry True Blood) returns this Sunday, and I am soooo excited! Well written, beautifully acted, and oh the clothing! The fabulous clothing!

One particular episode stands out in my mind this morning-we'll call it "Marilyn or Jackie", though I am not sure if that is the true title. The guys and Peggy were working on the Platex ad campaign, and were discussing who women really want to be. Of course, the fabulous guys decide that women want to be who men want them to be! Wowzers. Anyways, it was decided (though Peggy rightfully disagreed) that all women either want to be Marilyn Monroe or Jackie Kennedy, that these are the only two types of women that exist. Though I completely disagree, it was still a fascinating episode The men strolled around the office labeling all the women as a "Jackie" or a "Marilyn". Except one-Joan. They took one look at her and said "Marilyn is a Joan."

Which brings us to the fashion portion of this blog: Joan Holloway of Mad Men, played by the gorgeous Christina Hendricks.

Let's start with this, Joan doesn't take any shit from anyone, at least not in the workplace (her personal life is another matter). She is Sterling Cooper's office manager, runs a tight ship, and looks amazing while doing so! She dons pencil skirts, form fitting dresses, heels, and her gorgeous red hair. She's the office bombshell, yet she commands respect.

I think that, subconsciously, Joan is the reason I decided to be a redhead again. I realized that redheads can have just as much fun as platinum blondes (without wrecking havoc on my poor hair).

Ok my dears, I am off to work. There are comic books and clothes to be packed :) I will try to blog more latter today. I leave you with a fab Joan video I found on YouTube. Have a fabulous day!

Golden Age of Couture

Yes, it has been a while since I blogged. This summer has been full of both work and good times, and I am thankful for both :)

Today Aron took me to see "The Golden Age of Couture" exhibit at the Frist Center in downtown Nashville. It was truly an inspiring look at fashion as an art form, from the 1940s-1950s, with the focus on Christian Dior and his post WWII "New Look". Fashion critics often refer to "the dying" or even "dead" art of couture, which makes me shudder. I know in this economy that purchasing couture clothing is considered beyond decadent (maybe even obscene) but to me couture is art! The craft and skill that it takes to create a couture garment is truly amazing.

In case you haven't noticed I love clothing :) What to wear to this fab exhibit weighed on my mind for a bit. I chose my old Old Navy top, Pure Energy print skirt, bare black sandals from Ross, and my Betseyville leopard bag. Hey, I never said I could afford, or even prefer, high end name brands! Fashion is art, and art shouldn't be founded in snobbery. You should love a Chanel bag because of it's beauty, not because you want to show the world the balance of your bank account.

I would love to be able to mix my $5 Target finds with a Chanel bag, but alas it Chanel is not in my budget, lol. Here is a pic of my outfit, I apologize for the crappy cell phone pic.

Exhibition at the Frist

Walking into the exhibition-Hi Aron! Hee heee

Me posing

The Frist Center is an amazing deco building, that was a post office back in the day. Actually, Aron and I found that there sill is a small post office located downstairs. This is the gorgeous lobby:

The exhibit was amazing and larger than I expected. It was such a thrill to see all of those beautiful creations. So why no pics of the dresses? No photography was allowed. But here is a sweet video about the exhibition. The Frist was the only U.S. location that the exhibition was loaned out to!

It was a great day, and my fabulous hubby was patient enough to attend with me :)

Hugs to all
